Mahindra & Mahindra has taken the wraps off its production-ready Global Pik Up concept, unveiling a new double-cab bakkie that will be sold as the Mahindra Lifestyler in international markets. The vehicle, known as the Scorpio Lifestyler in its home market of India, was first shown as a concept in Cape Town in August 2023 and has now entered its final production form with minimal changes from the original design.

South African buyers can expect the Lifestyler to arrive on local shores in the first half of 2027, with some reports pointing to a first-quarter launch. The bakkie will compete in the highly contested midsize lifestyle pickup segment against established rivals including the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max, as well as newer entrants such as the GWM P500 and P300.

The Lifestyler was designed at the Mahindra India Design Studio in Mumbai and developed at the Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai. It is built on the company's next-generation body-on-frame ladder chassis, a platform that also underpins the Scorpio-N SUV. Mahindra has positioned the vehicle as a bakkie capable of handling both work duties and leisure activities, with the company describing its approach as combining "payload and playload”.

The exterior styling of the production model has remained notably close to the Global Pik Up concept shown in Cape Town. The most significant changes include new headlight designs and different alloy wheel patterns. The bakkie features a prominent front fascia with a larger grille, chunky skid plate, and 18-inch wheels, along with roof rails, front and rear recovery points, and bash plates for those intending to take the vehicle off the beaten track.

Mahindra has unveiled three variants of the Lifestyler, each aimed at different customer preferences and use cases. The Valley Edition, finished in Artemis Grey, is positioned as a blend of work and leisure, drawing inspiration from expansive estates and offering a balance of practicality and refined comfort. The Reef Edition features an Aquareef finish inspired by the changing colours of the ocean and is designed for those drawn to outdoor exploration and new vistas. The Trail Edition, finished in Sahara Beige, embodies a more adventurous character, taking inspiration from vast desert landscapes and intended to appeal to buyers seeking off-road capability.

Inside, the Lifestyler departs from the Scorpio-N with a model-specific interior layout. The cabin features a large, portrait-oriented infotainment touchscreen similar to that found in the Ford Ranger, complemented by a freestanding digital instrument cluster. Mahindra has kept physical switchgear for climate controls, steering wheel functions, and centre console operations, a decision that has been noted favourably by early observers. The interior also includes a multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

While Mahindra has not officially confirmed powertrain specifications, the Lifestyler is widely expected to share its engine options with the Scorpio-N. The primary unit is likely to be the 2,2-litre mHawk turbo-diesel engine, producing approximately 128 kW and 400 Nm of torque. A 2,0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol engine may also be offered in some markets. Transmission options are expected to include six-speed manual and six-speed automatic gearboxes, with drive sent to the rear wheels or all four wheels via Mahindra's part-time 4XPLOR system with selectable terrain modes.

Mahindra is reportedly considering building the Lifestyler alongside the current Pik Up at its assembly facility in Durban. The company recently expanded its assembly operations at the Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone in KwaZulu-Natal, increasing local production capacity. A dual-model strategy would allow Mahindra to keep its commercial vehicle footprint with the existing Pik Up while introducing the Lifestyler to capture higher-margin consumer sales in the lifestyle bakkie segment.

Mahindra is positioning the Lifestyler as a significant step forward for the brand, moving beyond its traditional workhorse image to attract buyers seeking a bakkie that can handle both work and leisure duties. The company has confirmed that South Africa is a core market for the vehicle, alongside Australia, New Zealand, other African markets, the Middle East and Latin America.

The Lifestyler will not replace the current Pik Up range, which has built a substantial following across South Africa's agricultural, commercial and fleet sectors. Instead, the two models will coexist, with the Pik Up serving the value-driven commercial segment while the Lifestyler targets the premium leisure bakkie market.

Mahindra South Africa is expected to release further details about local specifications, pricing and model line-up closer to the vehicle's market introduction in 2027.
