Changan Commercial is set to resume operations in South Africa next month, reviving a brand that previously traded locally under the Chana name and built a reputation for affordable commercial vehicles among small business owners and entrepreneurs.
The reintroduction comes at a time when demand for accessible transport solutions continues to grow across South Africa's small business and logistics sectors. The new range, comprising five models, represents a modern evolution of the vehicles that previously supported thousands of local enterprises and will be backed by a five-year or 200 000 km manufacturer's warranty.
The rollout is being led by Jameel Motors South Africa, supported by an expanding dealer and aftersales network to ensure access to parts, service and support nationwide.

Marinus Venter, Country Manager of Jameel Motors South Africa, said Chana had built a strong reputation in the country as a trusted partner for small and medium-sized enterprises. "With Changan Commercial, we are building on that legacy by reintroducing a product that is proven, trusted and ready to support a new generation of South African businesses."
Changan's commercial vehicle journey began in 1984, when the company transitioned into a dedicated civilian vehicle manufacturer and introduced its first mass-produced light commercial vehicles. Developed through a technical partnership with Suzuki, these early microvans and mini-trucks laid the foundation for high-volume, accessible mobility solutions.
Throughout the 1990s, Changan expanded its light commercial vehicle offering, building the scale and technical capability to compete in high-demand commercial segments. This evolution culminated in the launch of the first-generation Changan Star in 1999, a model that introduced improved safety features and broader application across industries.
The Star range went on to achieve significant global success, with cumulative sales exceeding 10-million units to date and holding the top position in its segment in China for eight consecutive years. As the range evolved, it expanded into multiple configurations and markets, becoming a widely adopted solution for small businesses and fleet operators worldwide.
In South Africa, the Chana brand became a familiar presence across industries, from trade and services to logistics and small-scale distribution. A total of 8 456 units were sold during its time in the local market, many of which remain in active service today.
South Africa's SME-driven economy relies on affordable, dependable and practical transport to keep businesses operating efficiently. Changan Commercial's return responds to this need, introducing a new generation of vehicles shaped by decades of commercial vehicle expertise and modern engineering.

The return reinforces the brand's role as a long-term partner to South African businesses. Supported by a proven global track record, a recognised local legacy and an expanding dealer and aftersales network, Changan Commercial is positioned to re-establish itself in the country's light commercial vehicle market.
The company has confirmed it will continue to expand its national footprint, with plans to establish approximately 45 dealerships across the country during 2026. A parts warehouse has already been opened in Kempton Park to ensure the availability of genuine parts and national aftersales support.
Jameel Motors has partnered with VDS (One Logix) for vehicle distribution and DP World for parts logistics to ensure operational efficiency and on-time deliveries. The company has also assembled a team of experienced motor industry professionals, with an average of 20 years in the automotive sector, to lead the brand's reintroduction.
