The hybrid version of the Jaecoo J5 has joined the growing range that now has three powertrain options for buyers. The model joins the existing internal combustion engine range and the recently introduced fully electric J5 BEV.
The introduction of the SHS derivative follows the launch of the J5 BEV, which marked JAECOO’s first battery-electric vehicle in the South African market. According to Jaecoo, the expansion of the range is intended to offer buyers a broader selection of propulsion options and to provide a more accessible entry point into electrified motoring.
The J5 SHS combines a turbocharged 1,5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a 1,83 kWh battery. The hybrid system delivers a combined output of 165 kW and 295 Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels through a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission. Fuel consumption is claimed at 5,3 l/100 km. With a 51-litre fuel tank, the vehicle has a theoretical range of up to 980 km.

The vehicle measures similarly to its stablemates and retains the same exterior dimensions and styling cues. Exterior equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights and a panoramic moonroof. The suspension setup comprises MacPherson struts at the front and a multilink arrangement at the rear. Braking is handled by disc brakes on all four wheels, with ventilated discs at the front.
Inside, the cabin features black leather upholstery, a leather-trimmed multifunction steering wheel and multi-colour ambient lighting. The driver’s seat offers six-way electric adjustment, while the front passenger seat has four-way manual adjustment.
Dual-zone climate control, a power-operated sunshade and USB plus Type-C ports are fitted as standard. An eight-inch digital instrument cluster displays vehicle information, and a 13,2-inch central touchscreen manages infotainment functions. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity and voice command support are included. A 50-watt wireless charging pad and a six-speaker sound system are also part of the specification.
Practicality has been addressed with a power-operated tailgate opening to a 410-litre boot. Folding the 60/40 split rear seats increases cargo capacity to 1 214 litres.
Safety equipment includes six crash bags, electronic stability programme, brake assist, traction control and ISOFIX child-seat anchorages. Advanced driver assistance systems fitted as standard include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, lane departure prevention, traffic jam assist, emergency lane keeping and an intelligent evasion system. A rear camera and rear parking sensors are also provided.

The J5 SHS is priced at R459 900. The purchase price includes a 5-year or 150 000 km vehicle warranty, a 10-year or 1 000 000 km engine warranty for the first owner, a 5-year or 75 000 km service plan and 5-year unlimited kilometre roadside assistance.
Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager for Omoda & Jaecoo South Africa and iCAUR South Africa, said the addition of the hybrid derivative was intended to accommodate motorists beginning to move towards electrified mobility.
The J5 SHS is expected to compete in the growing hybrid segment of the South African new vehicle market. According to data from the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa, new energy vehicle sales have increased substantially over the past year, with traditional hybrids accounting for the majority of volumes in the segment.
