BYD Auto South Africa has introduced a new 350 kW flagship derivative to its SHARK 6 line-up, with the Performance model delivering increased power output and towing capacity alongside a suite of enhanced technology features.

The new addition joins the existing SHARK 6 Premium in the local range, offering customers an alternative specification that combines a 350 kW hybrid powertrain with a 3 500 kg braked towing capacity. The vehicle retains the plug-in hybrid architecture and all-wheel-drive capability that has defined the SHARK 6 since its local introduction.

At the core of the SHARK 6 Performance is BYD's DMO Super Hybrid system, which pairs a 2,0-litre turbo-charged petrol engine with front and rear electric motors. The combined system produces 350 kW and 700 Nm of torque, enough to propel the bakkie from standstill to 100 km/h in 5,5 seconds.

The maximum braked towing figure of 3 500 kg represents an increase over the Premium model, positioning the Performance derivative for customers who regularly tow boats, caravans, trailers or heavy work equipment.

A 29,58 kWh battery pack provides an electric-only driving range of up to 80 km, according to WLTP testing protocols. With a full battery and a full 60-litre fuel tank, the vehicle offers a combined range of up to 640 km.

AC charging is supported at approximately 7 kW, with a full charge taking about four hours. DC fast charging is available at up to 55 kW, with a quoted charging time of roughly 35 minutes under suitable conditions.

The plug-in hybrid configuration enables shorter daily commutes to be completed using electric power alone, while the petrol engine provides flexibility for longer journeys and towing applications where charging infrastructure may be limited.

Both SHARK 6 derivatives feature BYD's DMO all-wheel-drive system, which integrates the petrol engine with front and rear electric motors to deliver responsive power delivery and enhanced traction across varied surfaces.

The Performance model includes Crawl Mode, which automatically manages speed, power delivery and braking during low-speed off-road manoeuvres. This allows the driver to concentrate on steering when navigating rocky terrain, sand, mud or steep inclines.

Ground clearance is rated at 230 mm, and the vehicle rides on 18-inch wheels. Vehicle-to-Load technology is also featured, with power outlets in the load bin capable of operating equipment such as portable fridges, lighting and other appliances when camping or working away from conventional power sources.

The cabin retains the spacious layout of the SHARK 6 range while introducing several model-specific updates. A new column-mounted gear selector frees up space around the centre console and contributes to a cleaner interior layout.

A 15,6-inch infotainment touchscreen serves as the primary interface, with electrically adjustable front seats included as standard. Google Automotive Services are integrated into the system, providing built-in Google Maps navigation and access to selected applications through the Google Play Store.

The SHARK 6 Performance is available in four exterior colours: Outback Orange, Obsidian Black, Snowy White and Atlantis Grey.

Steve Chang, Managing Director of BYD Auto South Africa, said the new model builds on the foundation established by the SHARK 6 Premium.

"The SHARK 6 has redefined what customers can expect from a bakkie, combining plug-in hybrid technology, strong performance and everyday practicality in one of South Africa's most competitive vehicle segments," Chang said.

"The new SHARK 6 Performance builds on that foundation with more power, greater towing capability and additional technology. At the same time, the SHARK 6 Premium remains an important part of our range, giving customers the flexibility to choose the model that best suits their lifestyle, towing requirements and budget."

The BYD SHARK 6 Performance is available to order through BYD dealerships nationwide, with pricing starting from R1 149 900.

The vehicle is supported by a 5-year/100 000 km vehicle warranty, a 5-year/100 000 km maintenance plan and an 8-year/200 000 km battery warranty, subject to BYD South Africa's standard terms and conditions.
