Seven months ago Jeep introduced the latest version of the Grand Cherokee SUV, a vehicle which we tested and reviewed here. This was the spacious 7-seater variant, available with different seating configurations. Fast forward to May 2023 and the brand has launched a 5-seater version of its imposing Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV.

External tweaks

Not everyone needs a 7-seater in their lives, and for those who like the Jeep Grand Cherokee but aren't interested in forking out the extra cash for two additional seats, Jeep created this. The new 5-seater Jeep Grand Cherokee is available in the Limited, Overland and Summit variants. Not a lot has been done to alter the Jeep's imposing looks, except for some design tweaks here and there. At the rear of the 5-seater Grand Cherokee, the D-pillar tapers off inwards, and its roof is lower which is how you tell them apart. This is obviously because there isn’t a third row of seats to accommodate, or space for additional headroom. It also has a slightly wider and larger grille than its 7-seater sibling. Speaking of the grille, they’ve updated its internals and added active grille shutters for improved performance and fuel economy.

Interior & Tech

As before, you get a fully kitted-out cabin with dual screens; one 10.1-inch infotainment screen in the centre of the dash, as well as a 10.25-inch screen for the front passenger to enjoy their choice of entertainment. Both front and rear seats are still heated and cooled, as you would find in the 7-seater, and the front enjoys new 16-way adjustable seats with lumbar support.

We raved about the McIntosh sound system in our review of the Jeep Grand Cherokee L Overland last year, and you’ll find it in this variant as well. It boasts 19 speakers, including a 10-inch subwoofer at the rear, resulting in a total output of 950 watts. In layman’s terms, the Macintosh sound system is not to be looked down upon, it’s serious business.

Off-road capable

The one thing we didn’t get to do with the Jeep Grand Cherokee 7-seater was to take it on an off-road expedition to see how capable it was. This time around Jeep ensured we tested all of its facets, including its 4X4 capabilities. With the Jeep Quadra-lift air suspension, the Grand Cherokee can go from 287mm off the ground (its resting stance) to 610mm wading through water. After crawling over boulders, through gorges and wading through water, we were convinced of the Grand Cherokee’s aptness for off-roading excursions. At your disposal is low range, 4X4, hill-decent control etc, as standard equipment when you purchase one of these.

How much is the Jeep Grand Cherokee 5-seater?

Powering the Jeep is still the silky smooth 3.6l petrol V6 motor which delivers 210kW and 344Nm. For fuel efficiency, Jeep has given it variable-valve timing (VVT) technology in this new spec.

For all of the above and more, you’re looking at a starting price of R1329 900. In addition to your purchase, Jeep is giving every new customer of a new Grand Cherokee 15% off all Jeep apparel for one year.
