Nissan has recently announced that the Datsun brand will again be discontinued.

The Datsun brand has already been discontinued in Russia and now in India as well. The Datsun’s we get here in SA are assembled in India, so this means no Datsun’s for SA either

Nissan says: “As part of Nissan’s global transformation strategy, Nissan is focusing on core models and segments that bring the most benefit to customers, dealer partners and the business.

“We can reassure all existing and future Datsun owners that customer satisfaction remains our priority, and we will continue to provide the highest levels of aftersales service, parts availability and warranty support from our national dealership network.”

The Datsun brand was first discontinued in 1986 and used to be one of SA’s favorite brands for many years prior. After 1986 Datsun then adopted the global Nissan nameplate, only to return in 2013.

Not all is lost in this segment.

I am pretty sure Suzuki will fill the gap for now, the sales of the Swift and the entry level Alto has not been bad, actually they are doing great in the current economic climate.

There are also rumors that the Chery Tiggo 2Pro will be coming to SA, so watch this space.
