South Africa’s Used Car Market Shows Resilience Amid Shifting Consumer Preferences

South Africa’s used vehicle market has displayed remarkable activity in the first quarter of 2026, with a substantial sample of 102 759 vehicles added to dealer platforms. Among the 100 408 cars in that total, the average used car listed for R487 500 during the quarter, in a market that remains broadly accessible, yet increasingly polarised between affordable runabouts and premium luxury models.

Suzuki Cars dominated the volume charts with 15 245 units listed, but its average price of R279 500 underscores the brand’s focus on the entry-level segment. This contrasts with the premium marques occupying the upper echelons of the pricing ladder. Land Rover led the top 20 makes with an average price of R1 110 400, while Mercedes-Benz followed closely at R871 200, reflecting the enduring demand for high-end SUVs and executive sedans.

Median Price By Body Type

The body type analysis offers a compelling snapshot of South African motoring preferences. SUVs and hatchbacks reign supreme, constituting a combined 71 429 listings. The SUV segment alone accounted for 38 564 units, with a median price of R390 800. However, the bakkie market tells a story of robust commercial and lifestyle demand, with the iconic Double Cab Bakkie commanding a median price of R599 900, a significant premium over the Single Cab’s R369 900.

Average Mileage At Sale

Mileage at the time of sale presents a fascinating dichotomy between city and leisure vehicles. While Hatchbacks and Motorbikes recorded averages of 25 500 km and 9 700 km respectively – suggesting predominantly urban use – vehicles like Station Wagons (126 700 km) and Minibuses (61 400 km) have clearly been pressed into service for higher mileage duties.

Model Depreciations Year-On-Year

Looking ahead, the real test of the market lies in the ability of models to retain their value. The preliminary comparison of 2025 and 2026 pricing suggests that certain models are experiencing steeper depreciation curves, while others are proving to be safer investments. With the economic outlook remaining uncertain, South African buyers are increasingly scrutinising value, ensuring that the used car market remains a dynamic and critical component of the country’s automotive landscape.

Methodology

This report is based on 102 759 vehicle listings added to the CHANGECARS platform in South Africa between 1 January and 31 March 2026. Prices reflect the advertised listing price (or discounted price where applicable) at the time of listing – not confirmed final sale prices, as CHANGECARS does not capture transaction data. A vehicle is treated as "sold" once its listing is removed or disabled by the dealer, which serves as the closest available proxy for market exit. Figures are drawn directly from CHANGECARS’ own marketplace data and are not third-party or survey-based estimates.
